Opium Wars - Imperialism in China

The Opium Wars took place around 1839-1842 then again from 1856-1860. The reason for this war is because the British were importing more from China than they were selling to China, the British needed to find something that the Chinese would buy. That's how Opium came to be sold in China by the British. The Chinese did not like this, but the British continued to sell Opium in China. These wars between Britain and China were called the Opium wars because the main problem was Opium! Opium is the dried latex obtained from opium poppies. Britain and the Western powers defeated China in the Opium Wars which eventually resulted in the Treaty of Nanjing and the Treaty of Tianjin.

"Mountains of the Moon"

There were many hardships that Europeans faced when they were traveling in Africa. Some of the hardships these White Europeans faced was getting Malaria from mosquitoes. There were many, many mosquitoes and they were killing these European explorers. Richard Burton and John Speeke were 2 of these European explorers being affected. The explorers also faced getting attacked by African tribes. It is also very ironic that Lake Victoria a white lady was named the largest lake in Africa. Africa is dominated by the Black Race but the the biggest Lake is not named by somebody black, it is named after a White Lady!!!!!! The primary technological advantage the Europeans had over the Africans was weapons. The Europeans had machine guns that could easily wipe out the Africans. The Europeans easily controlled over Africa because they were much stronger and much smarter than the African people. They were much advance than the African people. From the movie "Mountains of the Moon" the African people didn't even know what a gun was, they didnt even know to pour Tea. These are why the Europeans could easily control the Africans

Imperialism Project

We did the Imperialism Project so we could understand the past. We also could learn where people traveled to, how they traveled there car, ship, plane etc and why they wanted to travel there. I learned from the project that European explorers used African Slaves as their workers for working in the plantations. I also learned European explorers tried to go to the spice islands which is present day Indonesia, India and Malaysia. I remember from the Imperialism project that it was a worksheet with the picture of the entire World. In another worksheet it was specific things and we had to cut it and glue it to the worksheet with the picture of the entire World.
